Brunt's Quality Pays
Sheffield Wednesday boss Brian Laws was satisfied to see his side record another impressive away win, beating Cardiff City 2-1 at Ninian Park.
The Owls were pegged back to 1-1 on the eve of half time but Deon Burton's goal from a Chris Brunt cross brought plenty of praise from the manager.
"It was always going to be a tough game because Cardiff needed to win," Laws said. "We were quite relaxed and we are not coming into games looking to draw, we are looking to win them and today was no exception. We have taken a little bit of pressure and dealt with it but it was really nice to get the first goal, particularly for Leon Clarke.
"We brought Leon in from Wolves and sent him out on loan just to get some fitness and it has certainly shown today that has been a real plus for him. He worked his socks off out there and he is a very powerful young man and I was pleased for him to get the goal.
"There was a certain amount of quality for the second goal, particularly from Chris Brunt. He produced a very similar cross at Crystal Palace and you can't defend it. Deon Burton threw himself at it again and got us a goal."
Laws was pleased to hold out under late pressure but is keen to keep pushing for a shot at the play-offs no matter how unlikely it may be. The Owls are now unbeaten in eight matches.
"We had to dig in for the last 15 minutes but we are away from home and expect a barrage of crosses and efforts. Most of it we dealt with very well," Laws said.
"While it [a play off place] is still there you can see from the spirit in the team that they are going to have a right go at it. Our away record is phenomenal and if we can match that at home then you just never know. Nobody has switched off, nobody is on holiday and sometimes at this stage of the season when you're that far away there can be a dip in form but out players have stepped up another gear."
