Laws: We Need Leaders
Owls manager, Brian Laws, was angered by his team's capitulation in the 3-2 defeat at Charlton on Saturday afternoon.
The Wednesday boss told his players he wanted more of the same at half time with his side winning 2-0 but slack defending again cost the team as they remain bottom of the Championship.
"It was a fantastic start to come to Charlton and we carried out our first half plan," Laws said. "Everything went really well. We were comfortable, organised, dealt with everything that they had and we got the positions right.
"We got a two-goal cushion and at half time I said: 'it's more of the same, it's hard work which starts from the front and we don't sit deep.' The fact that we went out their for the first five minutes (of the second half) and sat so deep meant we invited trouble, that's what we got - trouble. It's really disappointing and I am really angry with it."
"Once they got that goal we sat so deep, even our midfield players were on the edge of our 18-yard box and that can't be right."
The number of goals the Owls have conceded has come to prominence in recent weeks and Laws knows what needs to be addressed. The manager will be looking to bring in at least two new players before the transfer window closes this week.
"We are conceding goals the way we are because there are no leaders out there. That is something we need to change, you need leadership out there," he said.
"I am desperate to bring players in. The areas I need to strengthen are quite evident. To be getting the ball into a striker like Iwelumo, who is all about aerial threat, to allow him to turn and have two shots at goal is just not right.
"We have conceded ten goals in three games and it is slapping us in the face each week. We have got a week to do it and hopefully we can get bodies in because at the moment we are lacking that real experience and drive. They are so quiet as individuals and the team spirit needs to be upped."
