Laws Relieved To Overcome Nerves
Brian Laws was left feeling relieved after his side came from a goal down to beat Norwich 4-1 and guarantee safety on Sunday.
After a long season, with the Owls losing their first six League matches, Laws' team eventually finished 16th in the Championship - their highest position since early December.
"I'm glad it's over, that's for sure," Laws admitted. "This week feels like a month waiting for that game to come about, knowing that we were going to have a sell-out and that the crowd would get right behind us as they have done all year.
"The nervousness within the game showed with everybody, particularly in the first half. Norwich have come here and I said they wouldn't lie down, they'll come here with confidence to say 'we'll go and play our own game and take risks and attack at every moment we can.'
"They got an early goal but I always knew we'd bounce back because the resilience we have shown over the last 15 games. Every time we get a knock we bounce back," Laws said.
"It's been a struggle towards the end because we should have been quite clear a long time ago and the fact that we drew seven on the bounce has made it more and more difficult," Laws continued.
"It's been an incredible year in the Championship and it shows you that there is no divide between top and bottom, it's just about that consistency and for somebody to be promoted with around 70 points, it shows you the strength within the Championship and the fact that we have had to survive with over 50 points shows you how tight this division is."
While the Owls players did show signs of nerves during the final encounter against Norwich, Laws insisted that no blame should be levelled at any player for the performance.
"You have to forgive the players, that was a tense atmosphere today with everything to play for and, in my eyes, a must win game," Laws said. "It wasn't a case of going out for a draw because results have shown that draws aren't enough.
"In the first half I couldn't wait for half time to re-group and put them through what we needed to do. Thankfully they listened and pulled through. They are a good bunch of lads and gave everything that they could give us and the loan players in particular could have been forgiven for turning off and not really caring about the football club because they can return to their parent clubs with open arms. We have needed them and they've produced the goods to keep us in this division."
