Hillsborough
About The Stadium
With a current capacity of 39,812, Hillsborough Stadium is one of the finest stadiums in the country, with a tradition to match. Since the War, it has been a host venue for a World Cup and a European Championship, and has staged two League Cup Final replays and an incredible 28 FA Cup semi finals. The record attendance is 72,841, for an FA Cup tie against Manchester City in 1934.
Sheffield Wednesday first moved to Hillsborough in 1899, with opening-day opponents Chesterfield being thrashed 5-1 in a rousing debut on September 2. In fact, Wednesday won all their first 19 matches at the ground, 17 in marching to the Second Division title in that 1899-1900 season, and the first two upon promotion to Division One.
At that stage the ground was still named Owlerton Stadium, after the suburb of Sheffield in which it stands but, in 1914, this area of the city was taken into the parliamentary constituency of Hillsborough, and hence the ground was renamed.
