The Owls added another point to their cushion over Millwall after a goalless draw against Burnley at Hillsborough.

Wednesday had their opportunities but were unable to claim victory against a dogged Clarets side.

However Brighton's win at Millwall increased the Owls' advantage over the Londoners to six points with five games of the season remaining.

Wednesday posed the first real goal threat 12 minutes in when Chris Brunt rose to meet a bouncing throw into the box from John Hills, however the Ulsterman's header narrowly cleared the Burnley crossbar. Burton O'Brien's volley was also too high after Deon Burton challenged for Frank Simek's cross.

The play was somewhat scrappy during that first period with neither side succeeding in finding any rhythm in their play and the contest became a battle in midfield. Burton was the provider when Marcus Tudgay had a sight of goal, slipping a pass to his strike partner whose hard low effort was palmed out by Brian Jensen.

Hills tried his luck twice from distance early in the second half, driving just over the top a couple of minutes after having an effort charged down by a Clarets defender. Burton also started a swift Owls break when he won the ball in the centre of the pitch and carried it 50 yards only to see his intended pass to Tudgay intercepted.

Brunt was off balance and leaning back when he blazed a shot well over the top just moments before the visitors gave Wednesday two real scares. Firstly, Simek raced back to clear off the line after Andy Gray rounded Scott Carson and shot towards goal. Then the Owls breathed another sigh of relief when Chris McCann stole into the box only to plant his header wide of the near post with the goal at his mercy.

Midway through the half, Paul Sturrock opted to change things around in the SWFC attack with Leon Best replacing Brunt and Tudgay dropping back into midfield. Best saw a low attempt comfortably held by Jensen soon after his arrival and the Danish keeper also had to field a Frank Sinclair header which inadvertently flew towards goal.

Yoann Folly had a long distance shot saved and Hills' left-wing centre caused problems but Graham Coughlan couldn't get his head to the ball, then Tudgay's shot was blocked. Sturrock introduced Jon-Paul McGovern for his first appearance in over four months in a season beset by injuries for the winger, but the Owls were unable to claim the winner they craved.
