The Owls extended their long run of Hillsborough domination over Barnsley as Chris Brunt's marvellous injury-time strike earned a first home win of the season from a highly entertaining South Yorkshire derby.

It seemed Wednesday were set for frustration against ten men for the second successive home game until Brunt hammered in a fantastic right-foot volley in the first minute of time added on, giving SWFC an eighth consecutive win over the Oakwell outfit on S6 soil.

Wednesday were up against ten men for much of the contest after former Owl Paul Heckingbottom - Reds' captain on the day - was sent off for a second bookable offence after just 24 minutes but it seemed set for a draw after Glenn Whelan early opener was cancelled out by Brian Howard's 56th minute leveller.

Whelan had given Wednesday a perfect start, curling them in front with only four minutes played. Wade Small was tripped unnecessarily 25 yards from goal and Brunt played decoy, stepping over the ball and allowing Whelan to bend past compatriot Nick Colgan and in at the near post.

Wednesday were let off the hook four minutes later as the Tykes looked for an instant reply, Paul Hayes heading against the top of the bar from Michael McIndoe's cross before John Hills hacked the loose ball away from Marc Richards. The latter then caused problems down the Owls' left with a low centre that evaded the sliding Hayes, before McIndoe spilt Wednesday's defence open with a flighted pass that Howard hooked over the top.

Hayes netted when clearly offside while Wednesday saw efforts from Small and Tommy Spurr blocked when a Brunt free-kick caused problems for Barnsley. Their worries expanded in the 24th minute when Heckingbottom saw red after his second infringement. The left back upended Small after being cautioned for handball only five minutes earlier and referee Foy had little option but to dismiss him.

Martin Devaney forced a corner as Barnsley tried to regroup, swerving a shot towards the top corner which Brad Jones stopped but was unable to prevent going behind. Despite their numerical advantage, Wednesday were on the back foot with the Reds causing some real problems with their forays down the flanks.

Madjid Bougherra

Drew Talbot brought a straightforward save out of Colgan just before half-time with a shot right down his throat from the edge of the box after a break forward by Madjid Bougherra. Soon after the restart Brunt's lashed attempt was deflected into the sidenetting by a Reds defender after Small pressured Colgan into a hurried clearance and Hills floated a shot just over with the right boot after a dash into the Barnsley box.

The visitors got their reward for their first half pressure, ironically, as Wednesday were enjoying perhaps their best spell of the match. Richards broke to get behind the Owls' defence and, when Jones slid to block his attempt, Howard was able to slam the ball into the unguarded goal.

As Wednesday roared back, Colgan made a great stop with his feet to keep out Brunt's header from Frank Simek's centre before the winger fired disappointingly over the bar. However the Owls were dealt a blow as Talbot departed on a stretcher just past the hour after a collision in the Reds' area. Wednesday kept pushing and Colgan tipped Yoann Folly's effort over the top after the midfielder volleyed into the ground falling backwards, while substitute Marcus Tudgay headed Brunt's corner wide of goal.

Daniel Nardiello drove just past Jones' far post as the game entered its last ten minutes and was even closer after being released by Howard, beating Jones only to see his shot roll inches wide. But Wednesday have had their fair share of late winners against Barnsley over the years and another was registered in the record books when Brunt blasted in his super late strike after Barnsley only half-cleared Simek's cross, sending Hillsborough wild.
