Sheffield Wednesday came from a goal down to secure a superb 2-1 win at Plymouth Argyle on Saturday afternoon, goals from Akpo Sodje and and Burton O'Brien securing three Championship points.
After going behind through a penalty just after the restart, Sodje and O'Brien hit back in ten minutes for the Owls fifth win in eight matches.
Brian Laws had to make two changes to the team that beat Blackpool 2-1 seven days earlier. Yoann Folly started in midfield alongside Steve Watson with Glenn Whelan suspended for picking up his fifth booking of the season and Graham Kavanagh returning to Sunderland following his loan spell.
It was a fairly low-key opening on a grey afternoon on the Devon coast and Marcus Tudgay first pierced the Pilgrims defence with a good diagonal ball to set Akpo Sodje free on five minutes. Centre back Krisztian Timar did well to recover ground as Sodje raced at goal and saw his shot deflected for a corner.
With quarter of an hour approaching Plymouth skipper Barry Hayles and Sylvan Ebanks-Blake linked well in the Wednesday box but the latter's shot from 15 yards was easily held by Lee Grant in the Owls goal.
Wednesday had the ball in the net on 22 minutes after Jermaine Johnson's meandering run from the right back position to a central position just outside the D. The Jamaica international fed Sodje but the big striker had strayed offside when he slotted the ball home.
The Pilgrims best chance of the half came when Hayles headed inches over the bar at the far post on 24 minutes. But, despite a pressured back-header from Jermaine Johnson on the half-hour mark, the Owls well-marshalled back line were not under too much strain.
Richard Hinds and Michael Johnson's central defensive partnership was proving difficult for Ian Holloway's men to break down.
At the other end Sodje put a good ball across the edge of the six yard box but Timar steered it behind for a corner with Tudgay ready to convert.
The Owls best chance of the first half came on 41 minutes when Jermaine Johnson produced a superb deep cross from the right. Sodje towered above the Plymouth defence and connected to make a firm header down but goalkeeper Luke McCormick held on well.
Grant breathed a sigh of relief with half time approaching when he rushed off his line. David Norris headed a high ball past the Wednesday custodian but directed his header wide of the near post.
The first half had been somewhat flat with a 0-0 score line reflecting the amount of goalmouth action before half time. But any fan inside Home Park expecting more of the same after the break would soon be brought to the edge of their seats with three goals flying in within eleven minutes of the restart.
For Wednesday it was a shocking start to the second period as Frank Simek was penalised for bringing down Peter Halmosi just inside the Owls penalty area within less than 30 seconds of the restart. The spot kick was emphatically dispatched by Ebanks-Blake to make it 1-0 to the home side.
But Wednesday soon bounced back. Simek went some way to redeeming himself, providing a long throw into the box which Watson flicked on. Sodje controlled, turned and shot beyond McCormick from an acute angle for his first Wednseday goal on 51 minutes. The powerful frontman took delight in celebrating his just reward for a hard-working personal performance with the travelling fans behind the goal.
Plymouth pushed forward and looked to go in front again but Ebanks-Blake shot from eight yards was deflected over for a corner by Michael Johnson.
And, as Wednesday looked to clear the danger, Folly found Jermaine Johnson on the left who flicked inside for Burton O'Brien to race free from the halfway line. The Scot kept a cool head and finished expertly with a low left foot effort from 20 yards as the Owls took the lead in dramatic fashion.
The second half was certainly turning out to be a much more open affair and Jermaine Johnson continued to cause problems, embarking on a superb run and cross on 67 minutes, which was just cut out with Tudgay ready to pounce.
Holloway threw on attacking substitutes for the latter stages of the game and added time saw the Pilgrims desperately trying to secure a point as they flooded the Owls box with attackers.
But Jermaine Easter headed wide at the death and for O'Brien there was a delightful feeling of de ja vu as the midfielder repeated the goal scoring heroics from the corresponding fixture last season, in which the Owls also came back from a penalty goal down to win with two goals in the second half.
