Sheffield Wednesday found a dramatic last-gasp equaliser at West Brom on Tuesday night as Steve Watson drove home a stoppage time strike to make it 1-1 at the Hawthorns.

Wednesday were staring a 1-0 defeat in the face, being punished by a 76th minute Kevin Phillips header after a second half onslaught on Lee Grant's goal.

The Owls keeper made a string of excellent saves after the break to keep Wednesday in the game but eventually the Baggies found a way through.

Some resolute defensive work had kept Wednesday in the game but it looked like being a disappointing defeat until Watson popped up at the end.

Boss Brian Laws made two changes to the team that won 2-1 at Plymouth on Saturday. With Michael Johnson picking up a back problem, 18-year-old Mark Beevers starts in defence while midfielder Glenn Whelan returns to the starting eleven after his one-match suspension to replace Yoann Folly.

The hosts started with intent and kept the Owls pinned back in their own half for much of the opening ten minutes. Beevers acquitted himself well with a couple of strong headers under pressure while fellow centre half, Richard Hinds also had to make some telling interceptions.

Despite clashing heads with Akpo Sodje, Baggies striker Ishmael Miller was proving a handful for the Owls back four and, with a dangerous delivery always on the cards, Wednesday had to be on their guard.

It was not until the quarter hour mark when the visitors first put Albion under pressure. Marcus Tudgay picked up a stray pass 30 yards from goal, took a touch and saw his shot blocked only for Jermaine Johnson to whip in a teasing cross which the home defence headed out for a corner.

Burton O'Brien swung the ball in and Hinds headed just over from ten yards.

Five minutes later and West Brom had the ball in the net. Miller's powerful run into the left of the box saw the forward slide the ball across goal and Hinds unavoidably deflect the ball over the goal line. Relief came for the Owls with a raised flag from the assistant referee for offside.

It was certainly backs to the walls stuff for Laws' men in the first half hour and Wednesday had their work cut out defensively.

But work they did and Albion were limited to long-range efforts on the whole, Lee Grant relatively untroubled until the 38th minute when Miller turned on the edge of the box and produced a fierce rising left foot effort which the former Derby keeper acrobatically pushed over his crossbar.

From the resulting corner, Wednesday were luck to see Kevin Phillips' powerful strike rebound away to safety off the inside of the post.

Moments earlier Laws men could have taken the lead themselves when Whelan supplied a superb free kick from the right which Tudgay headed wide at the far post to his evident frustration.

Tony Mowbray's team may have been on top in possession and pressure stakes but the 0-0 score line at half time showed that neither goalkeeper had been too busy before the break.

If anything the hosts upped the ante after the interval. Hoefkens charged down the right and pulled the ball back to Phillips, just outside the box as the Owls defence retreated. The Baggies goal getter took a touch before shooting which allowed Hinds to make a vital lunging block.

Moments later Robert Koren worked his way skilfully to the byline and pulled back to Miller who should have done better from eight yards. But Miller was soon causing more trouble. The Baggies front man showed Hinds power and pace but Grant did well to save at his near post.

The Owls goalie was certainly earning his money in the second half and did well to save from Phillips, who looked lucky not to be given offside as Greening slotted him through.

In the 65th minute Grant again kept the scores level as Paul Robinson headed goalwards from Koren's cross. He then superbly clawed away Greening's testing centre before holding on to Phillips low 25-yarder.

Perhaps inevitably though, the prolific Phillips eventually beat Grant with a powerful far post header in the 76th minute, converting Robinson's excellent left wing delivery for his tenth goal of the season.

It was 70 games since West Brom had gone without scoring and a scoreless draw always looked against the odds.

With ten minutes remaining Phillips was stretchered off after going down awkwardly in the box, the Baggies reduced to ten men with all three substitutions having already been made.

Three minutes of added time had been indicated by the referee and Robinson went down injured in his own penalty area, staying on the deck for some time before eventually making his way back into the action.

When Watson eventually drove home from a corner, the Albion bench felt that time should have been up but the former West Brom man. But the experienced competitor would not be denied his glory, scoring his first goal for Wednesday to secure the Owls first draw in 25 matches.
