Wednesday were left awaiting their first league point of the new campaign after Wolves took the spoils at Hillsborough.
A second strike in three days from the impressive Wade Small was not enough for the Owls as their Black Country visitors' clinical finishing proved the difference, with Freddie Eastwood, Michael Kightly and Jay Bothroyd all on the mark.
Eastwood put Wolves in front in the 14th minute and, though Small struck just before half-time, Kightly's 48th minute effort and a third from Bothroyd in injury time killed Wednesday off.
Owls fans had to wait an extra 15 minutes to see their team take to the Hillsborough turf for the first time in the campaign. The kick off was delayed with SWFC keeper Lee Grant among the thousands caught up in heavy traffic on the northbound M1 on their way to Sheffield 6.
The teams emerged onto a field made greasy by the persistent drizzle which had been falling for a few hours prior to kick-off. The ball was zipping about in the early stages with neither side really able to get their foot on it and dictate the pace of the game.
Wednesday had an early shout for a penalty waved away after Deon Burton tumbled under Darren Ward's tackle but it was the visitors who managed to get themselves in front on 14 minutes. Kightly seized possession and slipped in Andy Keogh down the right channel, the former Scunthorpe man's shot was palmed out by Grant but Eastwood was able to prod home from six yards.
A further blow followed on 20 minutes as Francis Jeffers limped off with what looked like a calf problem and ex-Wolves striker Leon Clarke came off the bench to partner Burton in attack. Small headed over at the back post from Jermaine Johnson's smart checkback and cross before seeing a low shot deflected wide.
At the opposite end, Keogh had an effort chalked off for offside and also lofted off the crossbar after a goalmouth scramble. Wednesday looked to retaliate and Small was denied a third time when Wayne Hennessey made a smart stop after Kenny Lunt had teed up the erstwhile MK Dons winger, before Johnson fired over.
The Jamaican also drilled wide as Wednesday enjoyed a bright spell leading towards the interval, with Small and Clarke also having shots charged down, and Glenn Whelan curled a free-kick over the crossbar and drove another attempt into the wall. Small eventually got his reward in first half injury time as he started and finished the attack that pulled the Owls level. The Wednesday number 26 saw a shot spin off Kevin Foley and just past the near post, and he was in the right place to convert form close in after Burton's shot was blocked by Michael Gray from Whelan's corner.
However the Owls suffered a nightmare start to the second period as Wolves regained the advantage they had relinquished just before the break. Eastwood produced a spinning turn to move into space and laid the ball off for Kightly to drive in with Grant getting a touch. And only a super intervention from Frank Simek prevented Stephen Ward turning in Kightly's low centre shortly afterwards.
Wednesday found it difficult to recover, enjoying plenty of possession without really posing a threat. Small did well to shrug off Darren Ward and get a shot in that Neill Collins blocked and Johnson saw a right-wing centre curve goalwards and clip the crossbar. The former Bradford man also put a low cross straight to the waiting Hennessey after Whelan - who departed soon after with what appeared to be a groin problem - sent him away down the right with a brilliant throughball.
Burton had a header saved from Lunt's centre and Clarke was wide from Simek's fizzing ball into the danger zone as the Owls stepped up the hunt for a second equaliser. Small was inches away from delivering the goods when his low blast slipped through Hennessey's hands but the keeper recovered to clutch the ball on the goalline.
