Wednesday stored their fifth consecutive draw on Saturday, emerging from the basement battle at Scunthorpe with another vital Championship point.
Ian Morris gave the hosts the lead but Ben Sahar struck his second goal for the Owls to ensure ex-Iron boss Brian Laws moved another step closer to safety on his old stamping ground of Glanford Park.
Laws made three changes from the side that salvaged a point from relegation rivals Coventry on Tuesday at Hillsborough. Adam Bolder replaced Sean McAllister in the engine room, while Steve Watson came in at right back for Jermaine Johnson - the Jamaican reverted to his customary berth on the right side of midfield after a rare outing in defence against the Sky Blues. Mark Beevers pulled out of the pre-match warm-up so Tommy Spurr moved across to centre half and Peter Gilbert slotted in at left back.
After a cagey opening that stretched beyond the quarter of an hour mark - during which neither side forged a shot on goal - the hosts suddenly stole into the lead on 18 minutes. Morris won possession in the centre circle and advanced on goal but there was little evidence of what was about to follow. The Iron midfielder moved to around 25 yards away from the Owls' goal, squared up to shoot and unleashed a curling effort that dipped into the net past a stunned Lee Grant.
Morris had a chance to double his tally five minutes later but sliced his close-range effort wide before Wednesday finally created an opportunity of their own. Franck Songo'o stood over a free kick from 20 yards and stepped up to drill a low drive that whistled narrowly wide of Joe Murphy's left hand post.
The Owls came closer still on 28 minutes. Deon Burton broke free of the Scunthorpe defence and rounded the out-rushing Murphy, allowing Sahar to nip in and shoot towards an empty goal but Izzy Iriekpen raced back in time to thwart the danger.
Wednesday were dealt a blow ten minutes before half time when Songo'o was forced off following a strong challenge by Iron defender Cliff Byrne. Wade Small, having recovered from the virus that forced him to miss the Coventry clash, replaced the on-loan Portsmouth winger.
The first half ended as it began with no action of note and the visitors in need of more thrust in the final third. And Wednesday got exactly that two minutes after the restart.
Burton thumped a 20-yard free kick that cannoned off the wall and into the path of Johnson, who hit a low shot back across goal. The winger's effort was heading wide but Chelsea loanee Sahar darted in at the far post to divert past Murphy and put the Owls back on an even keel.
Scunthorpe were sparked into life and almost restored their advantage on the hour. Grant McCann floated over a hanging free kick from the right channel that deceived Grant and the ball hit the crossbar, struck the Owls keeper on the back and bounced out for a corner.
Small broke down the left at the other end and teed up Burton but the striker headed over the top as Wednesday pressed forward but the best chance of the second period fell to the hosts. Loanee striker Geoff Horsfield found McCann in oceans of space 12 yards out but the midfielder could only scuff a tame shot that was safely cleared by the Owls defence.
Steve Watson lashed a 25-yarder that fizzed over Murphy's crossbar ten minutes from time and substitute Bartosz Slusarski went close with a speculative effort before referee Tanner called time with both sides good for a share of the spoils.
