The Owls booked their place in the third round of the Carling Cup as Yoann Folly's strike with a minute of extra time left sent them past a Hartlepool United side who pushed them all the way.
Folly was in the right spot to turn the ball home after Deon Burton's cross was deflected his way by a visiting defender - the midfielder's first SWFC goal.
Burton had pulled Wednesday level with a strike halfway through the second period, after Ian Moore put Pools in front, before creating the opportunity for Folly's clincher.
Wednesday forced Pools keeper Jan Budtz into the first action of the evening, as the Dane stretched to palm out Glenn Whelan's rising shot, following a smart link up between Jermaine Johnson and Burton.
Budtz was subsequently quick to react well from the resulting Kenny Lunt corner, which Marcus Tudgay met with a firm near-post header, and the ex-Derby man couldn't get enough of his foot around the ball when Frank Simek clipped over a cross in the tenth minute.
Matty Robson sent a daisy cutter past Rob Burch's left-hand upright before United defender Michael Nelson got his body in the way of Burton O'Brien's shot after Budtz pushed out Simek's low drive and Tommy Spurr's hooked shot was smuggled off the line as the Owls cranked the pressure up.
Kenny Lunt was off target when Tudgay laid off Spurr's sharp throughball midway through the first period. Tudgay sent a header over the top from Spurr's deep centre and Budtz held onto Whelan's long distance attempt as the Owls kept probing.
However Wednesday were let off as the half-time whistle loomed as James Brown slipped onto his backside after Gary Liddle overlapped and cut the ball back to his colleague. And a great intervention from Richard Hinds denied the sliding Moore from Richard Barker's dangerous low cross shortly afterwards.
Budtz made a fine stop to halt Tudgay's low effort with his legs after Burton slipped his strike partner through after the resumption. The former Doncaster stopper then denied Tudgay when he jumped to power Lunt's corner goalwards.
Those saves proved valuable and timely for the visitors as they gained the advantage with nine minutes of the half played. Brown drilled a low ball in from the right and Moore finished off David Foley's shot from near in to give Pools first blood.
With Wednesday reeling, Pools made them work by keeping possession with neat passing movements and the Owls struggled to regroup for a time. A burst forward and deflected shot from Simek got them on the attack with a corner and started the spell of pressure that lead to Burton's 68th minute leveller. Johnson carried the ball forward before sliding a ball for his fellow Jamaican international to run onto in the left channel and drive a low left-foot shot under Budtz.
Six minutes later Budtz came to the rescue as the same combination in the box saw Burton's effort ricochet off the keeper's leg and arm to deny what looked like a certain second for the Owls skipper. Johnson was then close himself with a blast from long-range which flew wide before Whelan sidefooted well over the top.
Hartlepool responded with Foley's cross evading the Owls defence and reaching Andy Monkhouse at the far post, but the ex-Rotherham winger could only sidefoot back across the face of goal. Two onetime Wednesday men combined for Pools when ex-Hillsborough trainee Barker headed wide from Ritchie Humphreys' corner while Johnson headed over and O'Brien saw a low drive saved by Budtz.
It seemed Johnson had won it with a minute of normal time to go only for the winger's screamer from 30 yards to smack Budtz's right-hand post with the keeper beaten all ends up. Tudgay limped off soon after extra-time began with Lee Bullen coming into attack and Whelan forced Budtz to turn around the post after shooting from the edge of the area, before Richard Wood headed the resulting Lunt corner past the post.
Brian Laws introduced Folly and youngster Luke Boden soon after the extra-time break as the Owls looking for the winner. Bullen couldn't connect with Spurr's raking delivery and Budtz beat away Johnson's powerful shot, while Joel Porter lost his footing at the vital moment in front of the Kop. Then Folly popped up to net his late winner and send Wednesday into the hat for round three.
