Stadium Operations Manager John Rutherford has expressed his thanks to all supporters who attended last Sunday's match against Norwich for creating a fantastic atmosphere to spur the Owls to Championship safety.

Mr Rutherford was particularly impressed by the way the fans responded to requests to arrive at the game early and also that by five minutes before kick off, there were no queues at the turnstiles and everyone had taken up their seats without incident.

He said: "With over 36,000 spectators in the stadium and every available seat sold in the home stands, it is very satisfying to report that there were no incidents outside or inside the stadium - except for one ejection from the Kop and the need to ask seven Wednesday supporters to vacate seats they had occupied on the away stand.

"Even more rewarding was that although we had the biggest attendance that has been seen at any Championship match this season there was no mass pitch invasion at the end of the game, which allowed all spectators present to enjoy the post-match parade by the manager and players."

Mr Rutherford's encouraging comments follow those of Superintendent Martin Holloway - match commander on the day - who also had nothing but praise for both sets of supporters.

Mr Holloway said: "The atmosphere at the match was everything that a genuine football fan could have wanted - 100 per cent positive throughout."
