Owls boss Brian Laws believes that his squad became a stronger unit following the horrendous start to the 2007/08 season.

In the latest instalment of his in-depth interview with Wednesday World, the manager stated a number of reasons for a poor start to the campaign which kicked off with a club record six straight defeats.

But Laws was keen to stress that this difficult period meant the players had to toughen their mental approach to matches which helped them getting through to the end of the season with Championship status intact.

"To start the season with six straight defeats is something that I would not want even my worst enemy to have to deal with," Laws admitted. "But from that came a lot of positives; we addressed the situation, we got the players back on board and made sure the camaraderie, team spirit and work ethic was there.

"We had another mini pre season training camp for ourselves and once certain things were embedded in the mind we kicked on from there. I was really pleased with the response because having had no points from the first six games was a bit like having a hefty fine, as Leeds did. They had a 15-point deduction and we effectively started with minus 18.

"I think we have come through the other end much stronger for it and it's something we can bear in mind and draw on if we were ever in such a situation again," he added.

Laws also acknowledged his side's ability to bounce back from a goal down to get a result. Wednesday had the worst record of conceding first in a match in the Championship last season but the Owls chief knows that his players did not let this get to them.

"We ended up with the best record of recovery from a goal down in the league and that shows there is a steely resilience," Laws said.

"When we go a goal down nobody panics and that's the story of our season. The mental strength the players gained from those first six games stood them in good stead and they have shown they have the 'bouncebackability' to go on and win games," he noted, using the phrase popularised by Iain Dowie.
