After riding an early storm from the League Two champions, Wednesday maintained their 100% pre-season record, posting a 4-1 victory over the MK Dons.

Goals from Etienne Esajas, Jermaine Johnson and a double from Deon Burton overturned an early deficit as the Owls were able to see the game through comfortably ahead of the next instalment of pre-season action at the weekend against Bury.

The hosts wasted no time in putting the Owls under pressure with a well-worked move which saw Sam Baldock get round Wednesday captain Richard Wood. The MK Dons forward got good purchase on his shot but fired wide past Lee Grant.

The breakthrough was made with just three minutes on the clock as a slick pass from Aaron Wilbraham put in Florian Sturm who finished low and hard past Grant.

Positive signs from returning Owls striker Akpo Sodje gave the travelling support something to cheer. Linking up well with strike partner Burton, Sodje lead the line from the front and continued to chase down every ball.

And on 12 minutes, the Owls pressure paid off with a well-struck shot from Esajas. Sodje won a free kick from 25 yards which was quickly taken by Steve Watson and played short to Esajas. The Dutchman took a touch to steady himself and shot through the MK Dons wall and into the back of the net.

The visitors looked to have stirred since drawing level and were much more dangerous going forward. James O'Connor was the latest to try his luck but keeper Nathan Abbey easily saved his shot from outside the 18-yard box.

Shouts for an Owls penalty were turned away by the referee as Esajas looked to have been brought down. Good link up play by the forwards saw Sodje find goalscorer Esajas, who cut inside his man and went down under pressure but the Owls' appeals were waved away.

In a bid to restore their early lead, MK Dons nearly found their way through on the half-hour mark. Jemal Johnson's low drive looked to have beaten Grant but the Owls custodian got down well to his left to palm round the post.

But it was the Owls who were to take the lead. Sodje and Burton looked threatening up front and the latter stroked home from a yard out after good work down the right channel by his sidekick.

And the same combination put Laws' side 3-1 up a minute later. Esajas on the left found Sodje, who beat the offside trap and charged down at Abbey's goal. The hitman may have taken the shot on himself but opted for the square ball to Burton, who claimed his second of the game from close range.

Dangerman Esajas, now the subject of taunting from the home fans after his penalty claim, looked to add to his goal tally after some intricate ball work outside the box. His shot was on target but put wide for a corner by Abbey.

Coming back from the break Marcus Tudgay and Johnson came on to replace Sodje and Esajas. The second period started a little quieter with both sides probing and looking for the opening.

But it was Owls' substitute Johnson who was next to find the net, weaving his way through the hosts' backline and finishing well past Abbey following O'Connor's clever ball.

More changes came for Wednesday as two-goal man Burton was replaced by Leon Clarke, Watson by Luke Boden and Tommy Spurr gave way to Peter Gilbert.

Owls skipper Wood handed the hosts a lifeline on 66 minutes after playing a backpass into the path of Dons forward Craig Dobson. The striker should have made it 4-2 but placed his shot wide of Grant, sparing the captain's blushes.

Liam McMenamin and Rocky Lekaj came on to replace Richard Hinds and Sean McAllister with 15 minutes left on the clock.

After netting two from two in Holland, Tudgay looked to add to his pre-season tally by shooting from distance.

Laws made his last substitution in the final ten minutes as Grant made room for O'Donnell, giving the number two more valuable playing time with the game sewn up.

Johnson, this time down the right, then showed his pace and trickery once more as he created space to drive another shot goalwards. His effort was struck well but Abbey's save was equally as impressive.

Despite some late pressure from the Dons, rallied on by the home support, the Owls backline remained solid and able to snuff out any danger. It was job done for Wednesday, who were good value for their 4-1 win, leaving Laws and his men to move on to the next chapter of pre-season at Gigg Lane on Saturday.
