Brian Laws secured the loan capture of Chelsea midfielder Smith in July 2008.
The 21-year-old, an attacking midfielder who can play right across the engine room, signed a temporary SWFC deal that runs until January 10 2009.
Smith has two Championship loan spells under the belt, firstly with Queens Park Rangers during the 2006/07 campaign and more recently at Norwich City last time out. The former England under-19 international made 31 appearances for the R's and nine for the Canaries.
He top-scored for Chelsea reserves two seasons ago and ended that term by making his first team debut in the Premiership at Newcastle.
